Faced with opposition from key allies, the ministerial panel on fuels is unlikely to free up the motor fuel pricing regime when it meets on Monday but is almost certain to go for a marginal increase in prices of petrol and diesel with a view to reducing the amount of cash subsidy the Centre has to dole out to state-run oil marketing companies.

Reports filtering in on Sunday said key members of ministerial panel under FM Pranab Mukherjee — Indian railway minister Mamata Banerjee and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar — were opposed to the idea of allowing oil companies to set pump prices in line with global markets or raise fuel prices substantially. Fertiliser minister M K Alagiri is unlikely to support any steep rise in prices, as TN goes for assembly polls next year.

Bringing back the memories of the recent Jet Airways impasse, Air India executive pilots on Saturday started reporting sick across the country to express their “displeasure” over the pay and allowance cut effected by the management.

Five services were cancelled in Chennai while more than 16 services were hit in Delhi on Saturday. Chennai-Madurai-Chennai, Chennai-Trichy-Thiruvananthapuram-Sharjah, Chennai-Colombo, Chennai-Delhi and Chennai Mumbai services were cancelled.

Sources said that more services are likely to get cancelled in the coming days if the management and the executive pilots fail to iron out their differences. However, the executive pilots are adamant that they would not report to work unless the management withdraws the pay and allowance cut.

Air India has decided to slash the salary and allowances of executive pilots the senior pilots who also hold managerial posts in the level of deputy general managers and general managers and above. The airline has not cut the pay of line pilots captains and first officers who just fly — because they are part of the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA).

About 45 executive pilots are based in the southern region headquarters in Chennai. All of them are upset about the pay cuts.

“We do not have a union because we are part of the managerial cadre. But, the unilateral and unfair decision of the management may force us to form a sort of association soon. The executive pilots are not in a mood to work. We have decided to report sick. The effect will show in the coming days when more flights will get cancelled,” said Captain T T Shajahan, who is an executive pilot and former general secretary of ICPA.

Though the executive pilots do not have a union, they have quickly spread the word among themselves about the action plan that need to be followed if the management remained adamant.

“We do not want to talk to the management till they roll back the pay cut,” Shahjahan said.

Another pilot said that “most of the executive pilots are abroad at the moment on duty in Baharain, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries. They have decided not to report for work when they come back.”

An Air India official said that the flights were cancelled because executive pilots were rostered to fly these services much before. And “the management does not want to change the roster immediately for fear that it would seem like the airline is giving in to the pressure.”

The airline operates 25 services through Chennai. As the situation is likely to worsen, Air India’s CMD is planning to meet representatives of executive pilots on Sunday instead of Wednesday as earlier scheduled.

NEW DELHI: The country’s second largest private carrier Jet Airways, which is planning to replace its off-peak hour flights on metro routes by its low-fare service to contain losses, will add six more B-737 aircraft to its no-frill Jet Konnect network. “In the next 2-3 months we will replace off-peak hour full-fare flights by Jet Konnect,” Jet Airways official asking not to be named said. He said this is largely because there is very little demand for business class even on busier metro routes. Jet Konnect currently operates 130 flights across the country with a fleet size of 11 B737s. These six more aircraft being diverted from its full fare service to Jet Konnect will take the fleet size to 17. Jet Airways has seen a 20-25% increased load on flights operated by Jet Konnect, even though its yield has fallen by about 10%. Jet is planning to introduce all-economy Jet Konnect flight even on the country’s busiest Delhi-Mumbai route. “Despite the drop in yield, revenues are on the positive side,” another company official, who also did not wish to be identified, said. The airfare gap between a full-service and a budget airline has widened again to 30-35% level, following a sharp fall in jetfuel price. This has led to air-travellers moving away from full-fare to low-cost carriers. Incidentally, the two major budget carriers IndiGo and SpiceJet have significantly improved their market share in the past one year. The combined market share of the two airlines increased to 26.2% in August this year from 18.8% in the corresponding month last year. All the full-service carriers are now focusing on no-frill air service. While Kingfisher Airlines has shifted about 65% of its capacity to Kingfisher Red, Air India is gearing up to launch its budget airline Air India Express in the domestic market. “Corporate travellers have moved to economy class since the downturn in the economy,” the Jet official said. He highlighted that companies had also cut down their travel budgets. Now, even the government had embarked on a major austerity drive and has asked officials to travel only economy class. “The market is clearly moving towards low-cost air travel,” he said.

Jet Airways is always known for premium services like Kingfisher Airlines, but now they are launching a new economy service targetting lower middle class & regular travellors who are looking for low cost airline tickets in order to maintain their budgets. The premium class tickets are already in a slow down because of the recession and less travellors this year , following which this seems to be a good step by Jet Airways by launching ‘Jet Konnect’
Jet Airways – Jet Konnect LogoIt seems that Jet is going to offer all the services which they offer to their main services passengers excluding the meals which they have to buy onboard like the passenger do while travelling on other budget flights like SpiceJet, Indigo, Kingfisher Red etc. Currently Jet has a market share of around 25% but after this step they may be getting some of the economy travellors and this would increase their overall marketshare by year end. This service seems to be the cheapest of all Jet travelling options after Jet Airways & Jetlite where in the passengers get meal on the board. Hope these new flights at Jet Konnect would be running full and move towards the upwards trends.

New Delhi: Leading private carrier Jet Airways will launch a new economy service, ‘Jet Airways Konnect’, from Friday on select sectors, the airline announced on Thursday. The company said in a regulatory statement that Jet Konnect would offer almost all services of the parent carrier and would help the airline cater to the needs of the consumers opting for low-fare services. “The only difference will be that Jet Konnect travellers will have to buy their meals on-board,” the company said. Both Jet Airways and its low-cost carrier JetLite now offer food to their travellers on-board. The ground and in-flight services of Jet Konnect will be handled by the airline employees, the statement said. Initially, it will operate with two 737 and six ATR aircraft in sectors like Chennai-Coimbatore, Chennai-Madurai, Chennai-Kochi, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Bhopal, Mumbai-Udaipur, Bangalore-Pune and Bangalore-Mangalore. “Consumer demands are changing rapidly in a dynamic global environment. We believe Jet Airways Konnect service will give us the flexibility and speed to deploy capacity to meet these changing trends,” Jet Airways chief commercial officer Sudheer Raghavan said. The company late last month had slashed salaries of its senior employees as part of its cost-cutting measures to cope with the slowdown. Jet Airways’ market share in the first quarter of 2009 stood at 25.3 per cent, while Kingfisher Airlines was ahead of it with 27.2 per cent.

Tuesday’s thundershowers accompanied by vicious lightning rendered the all-weather instrument-landing system (ILS) of Mumbai airport useless, the first time this has happened since the deluge of July 26, 2005.As a result 11 flights were diverted while others were delayed by at least 45 minutes.
“As the glide path of the ILS on runway 27 of main runway 09:27 was not working, nine flights were diverted to Ahmedabad airport between 7:45pm and 9pm,” a spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Limited (Mial) said. (A source, however, said 11 flights were diverted: six Air India, one Kingfisher, one Jet, one GoAir, one SpiceJet, and a chartered flight.)

The ILS helps an aircraft to approach the runway and guides it towards touchdown automatically. Mumbai airport has a CAT-I (category I) ILS, which means it allows an aircraft to take off or land when visibility is down to 800m.

But on Tuesday the incessant lightning interfered with the system and it eventually stopped working. “If the ILS and glide path are unavailable, the pilot is not allowed by air traffic control to approach for landing,” an airport official said.

The lightning was so severe that it affected the lightning arrester barriers in the ILS. The problem was rectified by Wednesday morning by engineers of the Airports Authority of India, which installs and maintains the systems at airports across India.

Even secondary runway 14 of 14:32 could not be used on Tuesday owing to the rains.”Flight delays averaged 45 minutes between 8pm and 1am,” the Mial spokesperson said.

The spokesperson, however, claimed to be unaware about the impact of lightning on thearrester barriers.

In 2005, the system went on the blink when the entire airport was waterlogged for three days, flooding the ILS gear.
